Entry Procedures

The Bahamas is an independent Caribbean nation in the Commonwealth and is not part of the EU or Schengen Area. Many nationalities, including Japanese, US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens, can visit visa-free for short tourist stays, typically up to 90 days, while others need a visa in advance. Rules depend on your nationality and can change, so check the official Bahamas Immigration sources before you travel. If you transit through the United States, you also need US ESTA or a US visa separately.

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay in The Bahamas, and it is strongly recommended to have at least six months of validity to avoid problems, especially if you transit the United States. You will normally need proof of onward or return travel and a valid address for your stay. Check your specific requirements before you travel.

On arrival you may be asked to show supporting documents in addition to your passport. These can include a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation (hotel booking or a host address), evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, and travel insurance. Many visitors also complete an online customs and immigration declaration before arrival. Have these ready to speed up entry.

If you enter or leave The Bahamas carrying cash of about USD/BSD 10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies or bearer instruments), you must declare it to customs. Because the Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, both currencies count together toward this threshold. Failure to declare can lead to fines or seizure, so complete a cash declaration when required.

Visitors have duty-free allowances for personal goods such as a limited quantity of alcohol and tobacco, plus reasonable personal effects. Amounts above the allowance are subject to Bahamian import duty and VAT. Goods clearly intended for resale are not covered by the personal allowance. Check current allowances with Bahamas Customs before you travel.

Bring enough of your prescription medicines for your trip, ideally in their original packaging with the prescription or a copy and, if possible, a doctor’s letter. Controlled or narcotic medicines may require documentation and are more strictly regulated. If you transit the United States, US rules on medicines also apply. Check the rules with the relevant authorities before you travel.

No special vaccinations are required to enter The Bahamas for most travellers. A yellow fever certificate may be required if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present. It is recommended that your routine vaccinations are up to date. Check with your doctor or a travel clinic well before departure for personalised advice.

Most travellers arrive at Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau, with others using Grand Bahama (Freeport, FPO) or the many smaller island airports. You clear immigration and customs on arrival, presenting your passport, onward ticket and any completed online declaration. If you are flying on to the United States, Nassau offers US pre-clearance, meaning you complete US immigration in Nassau before departure. Follow the signage and have your documents ready.

English is the official language, so communication is easy for most visitors. The Bahamas drives on the left, and the electricity is 120V with US-style Type A/B plugs, so bring adapters if needed. The climate is warm and sunny year round, with a hurricane season roughly June to November. The emergency number is 911 (919 is also used), and the country calling code is +1 (242).
