Currency & Payment

The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR, symbol Rs), divided into 100 cents. Carry small notes, as large notes can be hard to break for tuk-tuks and small shops. Keeping a mix of small denominations makes everyday payments smoother.

Exchange money at banks, authorized money changers or the airport, and always keep your receipts. The rupee has seen periods of volatility, so compare rates before changing large amounts. Bring clean, undamaged USD notes, as worn or torn bills may be refused.

Cards are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants and shops in cities and tourist areas, with Visa and Mastercard the most common. However, cash is essential for tuk-tuks, markets, small vendors and rural areas. Always carry enough cash for everyday spending outside the main hubs.

Local mobile wallets exist but generally require a local bank account or number, so they are hard for short-term visitors to use. Travelers rely mostly on cash and cards. Contactless card payments are growing in cities and larger venues, but coverage is uneven elsewhere.

Tipping is customary and appreciated. In restaurants around 10% is typical if service is not already included. Small tips are welcome for drivers, guides and hotel staff. Keep small notes handy so you can tip easily throughout the day.

Sri Lanka is affordable overall. Local food such as rice and curry, public buses and guesthouses are cheap, while upscale hotels, safaris and private drivers cost more. Bargaining is expected at markets and with tuk-tuks, so agree on a price before you set off.

Do not assume a broad tourist VAT refund scheme is available in Sri Lanka. Any such refund is limited and the rules vary over time. If a refund matters for a large purchase, check current details with the retailer or the relevant authorities before you buy.
