Malta uses the euro (EUR, €), divided into 100 cents. Malta adopted the euro in 2008, so no local currency exchange is needed if you already hold euros. Coins and banknotes are the standard eurozone denominations, and both cash and cards are widely used across the islands.

As Malta is in the eurozone, most eurozone visitors do not need to exchange money at all. If you arrive with another currency, ATMs generally give the most convenient euro rates. Exchange bureaus exist at the airport and in tourist areas, but rates and fees vary, so compare before changing large amounts.

Cards are widely accepted across Malta, and contactless payment is the norm in shops, restaurants and hotels. Visa and Mastercard are taken almost everywhere. Some small kiosks, market stalls, buses and rural spots may still prefer cash, so it is wise to carry a little as backup.

ATMs are plentiful in towns, tourist areas and at Malta International Airport, so getting euros is easy. Bank-operated machines usually offer better value than independent ones. Watch out for foreign-card fees, and always decline dynamic currency conversion (DCC) to be charged in euros for a better rate.

Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay work at most card terminals in Malta, since contactless is standard. Fintech apps like Revolut and Wise are popular among locals and visitors alike. Just add a card to your phone before you travel, and you can tap to pay in most shops and restaurants.

Tipping in Malta is appreciated but not obligatory. In restaurants, leaving around 5–10% is customary if you are happy with the service, though some places already add a service charge, so check the bill first. Rounding up for taxis, bars and small services is common and always welcome.

Prices in Malta are broadly in line with Western Europe, and sometimes a little higher for tourist services. Everyday items and casual eateries can be reasonable, but popular resorts, seafront restaurants and the peak summer season push costs up. Booking accommodation early and eating where locals do helps keep a trip affordable.

Malta's standard VAT rate is 18%. Non-EU residents can claim a VAT refund on eligible purchases above a minimum amount. Ask the shop for a tax-free form when you buy, then get customs validation when you finally leave the EU. Conditions and minimum spend apply, and the refund is paid via the tax-free operator.
