From Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU), about 15 km from central Asunción, the usual ways into the city are taxi, ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, Uber and the local MUV, or a hotel transfer. Traffic can add to the journey, so allow extra time at busy hours.

City transport in Asunción relies on colectivos (city buses), which are cheap and cover many routes but can be crowded and slow. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, Uber and MUV, plus taxis, are convenient alternatives. There is no metro or tram system.

Asunción's city buses use an electronic fare card (billetaje electrónico) that you top up and tap to ride; some operators also accept contactless bank cards. There is no single nationwide travel card, so for short visits ride-hailing apps and taxis are often simpler.

Taxis are available at ranks and by phone; use metered fares or agree the price before you set off. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, Uber and the local MUV operate in Asunción and give transparent, upfront pricing, which is convenient for visitors.

Long-distance buses are the mainstay of intercity travel. The Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción links the capital with cities across the country, such as Ciudad del Este toward the Iguazú area, and with international routes to Brazil and Argentina. Passenger rail is essentially discontinued. Book coche-cama (sleeper) services for longer overnight trips.

Domestic flights in Paraguay are limited, with only a small number of routes and airports beyond Asunción, such as Ciudad del Este. For most trips within the country, long-distance buses are the practical choice. Check current schedules, as domestic services can be infrequent.

Carry small notes in guaraníes (PYG) for buses and small purchases, as change can be limited. Allow extra time in Asunción traffic, especially at rush hour. Ride-hailing apps are handy for getting around the city, while long-distance buses cover the rest of the country. Keep your passport for SIM registration and border crossings to Brazil or Argentina.
