Bratislava is served by M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS), from which city bus line 61 runs to the main railway station, alongside taxis and Bolt. Many travellers instead use Vienna International Airport (VIE), about 60 km away, reaching Bratislava by bus (FlixBus, RegioJet, Slovak Lines) or train. Buy tickets with an app or ticket machines.

Bratislava's public transport is run by DPB (Dopravný podnik Bratislava) and combines trams, trolleybuses and buses under the integrated IDS BK system. Services are reliable and cover the city well. Buy tickets by app, at machines or by SMS, and always validate them when you board.

Slovakia has no single nationwide travel card; each city runs its own system. In Bratislava, buy IDS BK tickets in the app, at machines, by SMS or on paper, and there are also travel cards for regular use. Tickets are time-based, so validate them when you board and you can transfer within the validity period.

Use licensed taxis and, wherever possible, book through an app for a clear, upfront fare. Bolt is the main ride-hailing option in Slovakia, with Uber available in parts, and both are convenient and transparent. If you hail a taxi on the street, agree the fare or make sure the meter is running before you set off.

The national rail operator ZSSK (Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko) links the main cities such as Bratislava, Žilina and Košice, with private operators RegioJet and LEO Express on some routes. Long-distance buses like FlixBus, RegioJet and Slovak Lines are well developed and often cheaper. Book ahead for the best fares.

Slovakia is a small country, so there are essentially no scheduled domestic flights; trains and buses cover the distances well. International flights use Bratislava (BTS) and Košice (KSC), though many travellers rely on nearby Vienna (VIE) for wider connections. For getting around within Slovakia, plan on rail and road rather than flying.

Consider flying into Vienna and continuing by bus or train to Bratislava, which is often the easiest route. On motorways, buy the electronic vignette before you drive. Trains are convenient for city-to-city trips, and the High Tatras have their own mountain transport, including a cog railway and cable cars for reaching trailheads and resorts.
