Austria is a member of the EU and the Schengen Area. Many nationalities can visit visa-free for short tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but this depends on your nationality and the future ETIAS travel authorisation is planned to apply. Rules can change, so check the official Austrian authorities and your embassy before you travel.

For Schengen entry, your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure and issued within the last ten years. Border officers may ask about your onward travel and accommodation. Carry your passport, as Austria can carry out identity checks. Besides a valid passport, be ready to show proof of onward or return travel, confirmed accommodation, and enough funds for your stay. Travel insurance covering medical care is strongly recommended and required for some visa applicants. Keep digital and paper copies of bookings. If you enter or leave the EU carrying 10,000 euros or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies or instruments), you must declare it to customs. Travelling between Austria and other Schengen or EU countries usually needs no cash declaration. Arriving from outside the EU, standard duty-free allowances apply for limited amounts of alcohol and tobacco and a value limit for other goods that differs for air and land arrivals. Goods above these must be declared and taxed. Travelling from another EU country, items for personal use generally move freely. Check current allowances before shopping, as limits and figures change.

You can bring medicines for personal use, generally up to about a one-month supply. Keep them in original packaging with the label, and carry a doctor's prescription or letter, especially for strong painkillers or controlled substances. Some medicines that are over the counter elsewhere may be regulated in Austria. If you are unsure, check the rules or ask a local pharmacy on arrival.

No special vaccinations are required to enter Austria, and no yellow fever certificate is needed for most travellers. Health authorities suggest being up to date with routine vaccines. Tick-borne encephalitis is a genuine consideration here, as Austria is an endemic area, so a vaccine is worth discussing if you plan hiking, camping or time in forests. Check current CDC or your national advice before you go.

Arriving by air from outside Schengen, you clear passport control where officers may check documents and ask brief questions. Vienna Airport is efficient with automated gates for eligible passport holders. Arriving overland from neighbouring Schengen countries, there are usually no routine checks, though spot checks can happen. Have your passport, return ticket and accommodation details ready for a quick, smooth entry.

Austria is easy and efficient to enter, and German is the main language, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Tap water is excellent and free, including Vienna's renowned mountain supply. Many shops close on Sundays, so plan purchases ahead. Cards are widely accepted but keep some cash for small cafes and markets. Trains run on time, so allow a few minutes at borders and stations.
