Ecuador is not part of the Schengen Area and runs its own immigration checks. Many nationalities, including Japanese citizens, can enter visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days, but there is an annual cap on the total days a visitor may stay. Extensions and longer stays require a visa. Rules depend on your nationality and can change, so check the official Ecuadorian sources and your embassy before you travel.

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry into Ecuador and have blank pages for the entry stamp. Make sure it is in good condition. Requirements can vary by nationality, so confirm your specific case before you travel.

At immigration you may be asked to show supporting documents besides your passport. These can include a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, and travel or health insurance. Have these ready to speed up entry.

If you enter or leave Ecuador carrying about USD 10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies or negotiable instruments), you must declare it to customs. Failure to declare can lead to fines or seizure, so complete a cash declaration when required.

Arriving travellers have duty-free allowances for personal effects and limited quantities of goods such as alcohol and tobacco for personal use. New goods or items above the allowance may be subject to duties. Declare anything over the limits and check current allowances with Ecuadorian Customs before you travel.

Bring enough of your prescription medicines for your trip, ideally in their original packaging with the prescription or a copy. Some controlled medicines may require a doctor’s note explaining your need. Carrying a note translated into Spanish can help at checks. Confirm the rules with the Ecuadorian health authorities before you travel.

No vaccinations are usually required to enter Ecuador for most travellers, but yellow fever vaccination is recommended if you visit the Amazon region, and proof may be requested if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Keep routine vaccines up to date. Consult your doctor or a travel clinic well before departure for personalised advice.

Most travellers arrive at Quito Mariscal Sucre (UIO) or Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE). At immigration an officer checks your passport and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay; make sure you receive an entry stamp. Have your travel documents and onward ticket ready and follow the signage on arrival. Flights to the Galápagos require a transit control card and park fees.

The capital Quito sits at high altitude, so take it easy for the first day or two to adjust. Spanish is the main language and English is limited outside tourist areas, so a few phrases help. The US dollar is the official currency, so carry small notes. Ecuador packs the Andes, Amazon, coast and Galápagos into a small area, making varied trips easy.
