Entry Procedures

Hungary is a member of the EU and the Schengen Area. Many nationalities can visit visa-free for short tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while others need a Schengen visa. This depends on your nationality, and the EU ETIAS travel authorisation is planned for visa-exempt non-EU travellers. Rules can change, so check the official Hungarian and EU sources and your embassy before you travel.

For most non-EU nationals, your passport should generally be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals can use a valid national ID card instead of a passport. Make sure you have blank pages, and check your specific requirements before you travel.

At the border you may be asked to show supporting documents in addition to your passport. These can include a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation), evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, and travel insurance for Schengen. Have these ready to speed up entry.

If you enter or leave the EU carrying EUR 10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies or easily convertible assets), you must declare it to customs. This applies when travelling between Hungary and a non-EU country. Failure to declare can lead to fines or seizure, so complete a cash declaration when required.

Arriving from outside the EU, you have duty-free allowances for goods such as tobacco (for example around 200 cigarettes) and a set quantity of alcohol for personal use, within fixed limits. When travelling within the EU there are generally no limits for goods for personal use, though indicative amounts apply. Check current allowances with Hungarian Customs before you travel.

Bring prescription medicines in their original packaging and carry a copy of the prescription, ideally with a doctor's note in English explaining what they are for. Some medicines that are freely available elsewhere may be controlled in Hungary, and medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic ingredients need to be checked in advance. When in doubt, confirm with the Hungarian authorities before you travel.

There are usually no special mandatory vaccinations required to enter Hungary for most travellers. It is sensible to be up to date with routine vaccinations. If you plan to spend time in forests or rural areas, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccination may be worth considering. Check the latest health advice for your situation before you travel.

On arrival, usually at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, you go through Schengen border control. There are typically separate lanes for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and for other passports. Officers may ask about the purpose and length of your stay, your funds and your onward or return travel. Have your supporting documents ready and answer clearly.

Eligible travellers may be able to use eGates at Budapest airport to speed up entry. Follow the usual hand-luggage and liquid rules for flights. For money, exchanging at city banks or using bank ATMs tends to give better value than street kiosks. On public transport, keep a validated ticket, as inspectors do check.
