North Macedonia uses 230V / 50Hz with Type C and Type F sockets (European two round pins). Bring a Type C/F adapter; travellers from 100–120V countries need a converter for devices that are not dual-voltage.

The main operators are A1 Macedonia and Makedonski Telekom (T-Mobile brand), plus Lycamobile; coverage is good in cities and along main roads. Prepaid SIMs are sold at the airport, carrier shops and kiosks. Bring your passport, as registration may be required.

If your phone supports eSIM, an international travel eSIM (such as Airalo) is a convenient option: buy one online before arrival and install it in minutes, with no physical SIM or shop visit. There is no free EU-style roaming here, so an eSIM or local SIM is worth considering.

Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and restaurants across cities like Skopje and Ohrid, and is generally reliable. Speeds are fine for everyday use. Use a VPN on public networks for sensitive tasks like banking.

North Macedonia has an open internet with no significant restrictions. All standard apps and services — messaging, social media, maps and streaming — work normally.

Handy apps include local taxi/ride apps (Uber does not operate here) for calling a cab, Google Maps for getting around, and a translation app for Macedonian. Card payment is widespread in cities, but carry some denar cash for markets, small shops and rural areas.

North Macedonia's country code is +389. App-based calls (WhatsApp, Viber, FaceTime and similar) are widely used and often cheaper than international calls. There is no free EU roaming here, so check your provider's rates. Save numbers in full +389 format so they work from any network.
