Entry Procedures

North Macedonia is not in the EU or the Schengen Area. Many nationalities, including Japanese, EU and US citizens, can enter visa-free for short tourist stays, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Other nationalities need a visa arranged in advance. Rules depend on your nationality and can change, so check the official North Macedonian sources and your embassy before you travel.

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay in North Macedonia, and many travellers ensure at least 3 months of validity beyond their planned departure to avoid problems. Requirements vary by nationality, so confirm the exact validity rule before you travel. A national ID card alone is generally not sufficient for non-neighbouring visitors.

At the border you may be asked to show supporting documents in addition to your passport. These can include a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation (hotel booking or a host invitation), evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, and travel insurance. Have these ready to speed up entry into North Macedonia.

If you enter or leave North Macedonia carrying cash equivalent to EUR 10,000 or more (in euros, denars or other currencies, or easily convertible assets), you must declare it to customs. Failure to declare can lead to fines or seizure, so complete a cash declaration when required and keep the receipt.

As North Macedonia is outside the EU, arriving travellers have duty-free allowances for personal-use goods such as a limited quantity of alcohol, tobacco and other items. Amounts above the allowance must be declared and may be taxed. Check current limits with North Macedonian Customs before you travel, as they can change.

Bring enough of your prescription medicines for your trip, ideally in their original packaging with the prescription or a copy. Some controlled medicines may require a doctor’s note explaining your need, and larger quantities may need to be declared. Check the rules with North Macedonian authorities before you travel.

No special vaccinations are required to enter North Macedonia for most travellers. It is recommended that your routine vaccinations are up to date, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-polio and others per your home country schedule. Most travellers arrive at Skopje International Airport (SKP), with Ohrid (OHD) as a secondary gateway. On arrival you go through passport control, where officers may ask about your stay and check your documents; there are exit checks when leaving. Passport control is usually handled by an officer rather than automated e-gates. Have your travel documents ready and follow the signage on arrival.

The capital Skopje and Lake Ohrid are the main highlights, and distances are short so the country is easy to explore. Summers are hot and winters can be cold and snowy, so pack for the season. Macedonian (Cyrillic script) is the main language, but English is understood in tourist areas. The local currency is the denar (MKD), so carry some cash for smaller towns, markets and taxis.
