Currency & Payment

The currency is the Qatari riyal (QAR, symbol QR or ر.ق), divided into 100 dirhams. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar, so its value is stable. Carry some small notes for taxis and small shops, as breaking large notes can be awkward.

You can exchange money at banks, licensed exchange houses and the airport, and rates are generally competitive. Because the riyal is pegged to the US dollar, rates are stable. Compare rates and fees, and keep receipts. Exchange houses in malls often offer good value.

Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard and often American Express) are widely accepted in hotels, malls, restaurants and shops. Contactless payment is common. Carry some cash for taxis, small shops and markets where cards may not be taken. Tell your bank you are travelling to avoid blocks.

ATMs are widespread in cities, malls, banks and the airport, and most accept international Visa and Mastercard. Withdraw during the day near banks or busy areas for safety, and be aware your home bank may charge foreign withdrawal fees. Choose to be charged in riyals, not your home currency, for a better rate.

Mobile payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted where contactless cards work, including hotels, malls and restaurants. Local options like Ooredoo Money are also used. Set up your wallet and add your card before you travel, and keep a physical card and some cash as a backup.

Tipping is optional but welcome. A service charge may already be included on restaurant bills, so check first; otherwise, around 10% is a common gesture for good service. Small tips are appreciated by drivers, hotel staff and guides. Keep small notes handy so you can tip easily.

Qatar is a high-cost destination, on a par with wealthy Gulf economies. Hotels, dining out and attractions can be pricey, though local eateries, supermarkets and public transport offer better value. Budget more for taxis, tours and imported goods. Prices vary by season and area, so plan ahead.

Qatar does not currently apply a general value-added tax (VAT) on most goods and services, so a typical tourist VAT-refund scheme may not apply. However, tax policy across the Gulf (GCC) can evolve, so do not assume it is fixed. Check any airport procedures and the latest tax rules on the official Qatar tax authority site before you travel.
