Barbados uses the Barbadian dollar (BBD, Bds$), divided into 100 cents. The Barbadian dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2 BBD to 1 USD. US dollars are also widely accepted, though change is usually given in Barbadian dollars, so it helps to know the fixed rate.

Because the Barbadian dollar is fixed to the US dollar, exchanging money is straightforward. You can change currency at banks, at the airport, and at many hotels. ATM withdrawals in local currency usually offer convenient rates. Since US dollars are widely accepted, you may not need to exchange much at all.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, larger shops and tourist attractions in Barbados. Contactless payment is common in these places. Smaller vendors, local buses, markets and rural areas may prefer cash, so it is wise to carry some Barbadian dollars as well as a card.

ATMs are available in Bridgetown and other towns, at banks, shopping areas and the airport, and generally accept Visa and Mastercard. They usually dispense Barbadian dollars. Watch out for foreign-card fees, and always decline home-currency conversion (DCC) to get the better rate.

Mobile payment adoption in Barbados is limited, and local wallet apps are mainly for residents. For visitors, the practical approach is contactless cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, which work wherever contactless terminals are available, typically in hotels, restaurants and larger shops.

Many restaurants and hotels in Barbados add a service charge to the bill, often around 10%, plus VAT. Check the bill first: if service is included, an extra tip is optional. If it is not included, tipping around 10-15% for good service is customary. Small tips for taxis and hotel staff are appreciated.

Barbados can be relatively expensive, especially imported goods, resort dining and hotels in peak season. You can save with local eateries and casual spots such as the Friday night fish fry at Oistins, roadside vendors, and supermarkets. Public buses are an inexpensive way to get around.

Barbados applies VAT to most goods and services, and there is not a broad general tourist VAT-refund scheme like in some regions. Visitors can instead shop at duty-free stores, where eligible goods are sold free of duty on presentation of a passport and travel details. Check the current rules and eligibility before you buy.
