Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK, kr), divided into 100 øre. Although Denmark is in the EU, it is not in the eurozone and keeps its own currency, so euros are generally not accepted. Denmark is a highly cashless society, and cards or mobile payments are used almost everywhere.

Currency Exchange Tips

Best places and methods to exchange money

Because Denmark is so cashless, you rarely need to exchange money. If you do want cash, withdrawing kroner from an ATM (hæveautomat) usually gives reasonable rates. Exchange bureaus exist at the airport and in cities but rates vary. Since many places prefer cards, a working card is more important than cash.

Cards are accepted virtually everywhere in Denmark, and contactless is the standard way to pay. Visa and Mastercard are widely taken, and the local Dankort is common among residents. Many shops, cafes and attractions strongly prefer cards, so a working card is essential rather than just convenient.

ATMs in Denmark are called hæveautomat. They are less common than they once were because of the cashless economy, but you can still find them in cities and major stations. Watch out for foreign-card fees, and always decline home-currency conversion (DCC) to get the better rate.

MobilePay is the dominant local mobile payment in Denmark, but it typically requires a Danish bank account, so visitors generally cannot use it. Instead, rely on contactless cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, which are widely accepted and work almost everywhere cards do.

Tipping is not expected in Denmark because service is generally included in the price. Rounding up the bill or leaving around 5-10% for good service in a restaurant is appreciated but entirely optional. There is no obligation to tip taxis, bars or cafes.

Residents outside the EU can generally claim a VAT (moms) refund on eligible purchases above a minimum amount. Ask the shop for a tax-free form when you buy, then get customs validation when you finally leave the EU. A minimum purchase and other conditions apply, and the refund is paid via the tax-free operator.
