Fiji runs on 240V, 50Hz and uses the Type I plug, the same three angled flat pins as Australia and New Zealand. Bring a Type I adapter if your devices differ. Most phone and laptop chargers handle 240V automatically, but check the label; single-voltage 110V appliances need a converter. On small islands power can be from generators or solar with limited hours, so charge devices when you can.

The main mobile networks are Vodafone Fiji and Digicel. Prepaid tourist SIMs with data are sold at Nadi airport, network stores and many shops, and are easy to set up with your passport. Coverage is good on the main islands and in towns but weaker or absent on small outer islands and at sea. Buy a SIM on arrival and download offline maps. The country code is +679.

If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy a Fiji or regional plan online before you arrive and connect on landing, with no physical SIM to swap. Local carriers and international eSIM apps both offer tourist data. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable first. eSIMs are convenient but use the same networks, so coverage is still weaker on small islands and at sea; a local SIM can sometimes give better island reach.

Wi-Fi is common in resorts, hotels and cafes in Nadi and Suva, though speeds vary. On smaller islands and budget resorts, Wi-Fi may be limited to common areas, metered, slow or only available at set times. Treat public Wi-Fi as unsecured and avoid banking on it. For reliable connection on the go, a local SIM or eSIM is best, and consider a data plan before island stays.

Fiji has an open internet with no general censorship. Popular apps, social media, messaging and streaming work normally. The main limits are practical: patchy coverage and slower speeds on remote islands rather than blocked content. Some streaming libraries differ by region. You can use a VPN legally, often for security on public Wi-Fi. Overall, staying online works much as at home when you have signal.

Handy apps include Google Maps or Maps.me with offline maps, a weather app and the Fiji Meteorological Service for cyclone updates, plus WhatsApp for messaging. For getting around, taxi apps have limited reach, so many travellers arrange transfers through resorts. Translation is rarely needed as English is widely spoken. Download maps, weather and your booking apps before heading to islands with weak signal.

Fiji's country code is +679. To call in, dial +679 then the local number. To call abroad from Fiji, dial the international access code then the country code. In an emergency 911 is widely used, with police also on 917, though numbers can vary, so confirm on arrival. Most travellers use messaging and voice apps like WhatsApp over data or Wi-Fi, which is cheaper than international roaming calls.
