Most visitors land at Nadi International Airport (NAN). Nadi town and the Denarau resort area are a short taxi ride away, and many hotels offer shuttle transfers you can book in advance. For island resorts, onward boats or small planes usually depart from Nadi or Denarau Marina. Suva, the capital, is a few hours away by road. Agree taxi fares or use a hotel shuttle for a smooth arrival.

On the main island of Viti Levu, local buses are the cheapest way to get around, linking Nadi, Suva and towns along the coast, with open-window buses adding to the charm. Minibuses and shared vans also run popular routes. Services are frequent by day but thin out at night, and timetables can be loose. There is no public transport between islands; you use boats and flights. Carry small notes for buses.

Fiji does not have a nationwide travel card like big cities elsewhere. On many buses, a stored-value bus card such as the eTransport card (linked to Vodafone) is used to tap and pay instead of cash, mainly around Suva and the main island. As a short-term visitor you can usually just pay the driver in small notes. If you plan lots of bus travel, ask locally about getting and topping up a bus card.

Taxis are plentiful and affordable around Nadi, Denarau and Suva. Many have meters; where they do not, agree the fare before you set off. App-based ride-hailing exists but is limited compared with big global cities, so taxis remain the go-to. Hotels can call a reliable driver, and drivers often offer set-price day tours. Carry small notes, confirm the price, and be politely firm on fares.

Between towns on the main island, express buses and shared vans run the coastal road linking Nadi, Sigatoka, Suva and Lautoka. To reach the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups, catamaran ferries such as the South Sea Cruises and Awesome Adventures services depart from Denarau. Some remote resorts use private boat transfers or small planes. Book island ferries ahead in peak season and allow buffer time for weather.

Domestic flights save time across Fiji's scattered islands. Fiji Airways and its regional arm Fiji Link fly between Nadi, Suva, and outer islands such as Taveuni and Kadavu. For resort islands, small planes and seaplanes offer scenic, quick transfers, though they carry strict baggage limits. Book ahead, pack light, and note that alpine-style weather and small runways can cause delays; keep flexible plans.

Fiji runs on relaxed island time, so plan connections with generous buffers, especially where boats and small planes depend on the weather. Book island transfers together with your resort to line up ferry, plane and pickup times. Carry small cash for buses, taxis and tips. Confirm your return transfer the day before, protect gear from sea spray, and never rush a tight island connection.
