From Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA/KLIA2), the KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about 30 minutes. Airport coaches, metered taxis (buy a coupon) and Grab are also available. In Penang, Kota Kinabalu and elsewhere, use the airport taxi counter or Grab. Confirm the fare or use the app.

Kuala Lumpur has a good network of MRT, LRT, monorail, KTM Komuter trains and buses (rapidKL), all easy for tourists. Penang and other cities rely more on buses, Grab and ferries. Trains are clean and air-conditioned. For getting around outside KL, Grab is often the easiest option.

Touch 'n Go is the main stored-value card, used on Kuala Lumpur trains and buses, tolls and parking. Buy a physical card at stations or convenience stores and top it up with cash — this works for tourists without a local bank account. Some transit also accepts contactless bank cards; check the gate signs.

Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app, offering upfront fares that avoid haggling and metered-taxi disputes. Metered taxis exist but some drivers avoid the meter, so Grab is usually easier and clearer. Avoid unlicensed taxis and touts. Grab is available in cities and most tourist areas.

Renting a car is practical for exploring beyond cities, and roads are generally good, with tolled highways (pay via Touch 'n Go). Malaysia drives on the left. You usually need a valid licence plus an International Driving Permit. City traffic can be heavy, so many visitors just use Grab in urban areas.

On Peninsular Malaysia, the KTM ETS electric train links Kuala Lumpur with cities like Ipoh and Penang (Butterworth) comfortably. Long-distance buses are cheap and cover most towns. To reach Malaysian Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak) you fly. Book popular trains and buses ahead, especially on holidays.

Domestic flights are essential for reaching Malaysian Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Kuching) and save time on long peninsula routes. Carriers include AirAsia (low-cost), Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air and Firefly. Book ahead for better fares and watch low-cost baggage rules. KLIA2 is the main low-cost terminal.

Use Grab for reliable, upfront pricing in cities. Get a Touch 'n Go card for KL transit, tolls and parking. The KLIA Ekspres is the fastest airport link in KL. Fly to reach Borneo. Malaysia drives on the left, and city traffic can be heavy, so allow extra time.
