Vietnam uses 220V / 50Hz. Sockets are usually Type A (flat pins), Type C (round pins) and sometimes Type F, and many outlets accept both flat and round pins. Bring a universal adapter to be safe. Most phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage and only need an adapter.

The main networks are Viettel, Vinaphone and Mobifone; Viettel has the widest coverage. Cheap tourist SIMs with lots of data are sold at airports and shops, and require passport registration. Data is inexpensive and 4G coverage is good in cities and most tourist areas.

If your phone supports eSIM, providers like Airalo and Holafly (and local carriers) offer Vietnam data plans you can install before arrival. It is the fastest option with no physical SIM and no queue at the airport — handy for getting online the moment you land.

Free Wi-Fi is extremely common — almost every hotel, café and restaurant offers it, often with the password on the wall or receipt. It is one of the most connected countries for casual Wi-Fi. Use a VPN on open networks and a SIM/eSIM for reliable data on the move.

The internet is mostly open — Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram all work normally. However, some content is blocked and online criticism of the government can have legal consequences, so be discreet. A VPN can help with privacy and occasionally blocked sites.

Essential apps: Grab for rides and food delivery, Google Maps for navigation, and a translation app for Vietnamese menus and signs. Zalo is the main local messaging app. Booking apps (Agoda, Booking.com) and a currency converter help too. Download and set them up before you arrive.

Vietnam's country code is +84. To call abroad, dial 00 then the country code. Emergency numbers are 113 (police), 114 (fire) and 115 (ambulance). Apps like WhatsApp, Zalo and Messenger are the cheapest way to call home over Wi-Fi or data.
