Laos runs on 230V at 50Hz, and sockets are a mix of types A, B, C, E and F, so many two-pin European and flat American plugs fit. Bring a universal adapter to cover the range, and check that your devices support 230V, as most phone and laptop chargers do. In rural areas power can be less reliable, so charge devices when you can and consider a power bank.

Local SIM cards are cheap and easy to buy from the main operators Unitel, Lao Telecom and ETL, at the airport, official shops and many stores. Tourist data packages are good value and coverage is solid in towns and along main routes, though it thins out in remote mountains. Bring your passport for registration and an unlocked phone. Buying a local SIM is usually cheaper than international roaming.

If your phone supports eSIM, travel eSIM providers offer Laos or regional Asia data plans you can buy online and activate before or on arrival, which is handy for staying connected from the moment you land. They are convenient but often pricier than a local physical SIM, so compare data amounts and prices. Check that your specific phone model supports eSIM and confirm coverage in the areas you plan to visit.

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, guesthouses, cafes and restaurants in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and other tourist areas, usually free for guests. Speeds are fine for messaging, maps and browsing but can be slow for video, and connections thin out in remote villages. For reliable data on the move, a local SIM is the safer bet, and keep offline maps downloaded for rural stretches.

Popular apps and international websites generally work in Laos, and messaging tools like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and video calls are commonly used. However, the online space is monitored and there are laws against content seen as critical of the state, so avoid posting anything politically sensitive. Treat public Wi-Fi as insecure, use a reputable app for calls, and keep social media respectful and low-key.

A few apps make travel in Laos smoother. Use Google Maps or Maps.me with offline maps downloaded, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to reach guesthouses and tour operators, and a translation app for Lao. A currency converter helps with the large kip numbers, and the Lao-China Railway can be researched online for intercity trains. Download what you need on Wi-Fi before heading to areas with weak signal.

The country calling code for Laos is +856. To call abroad from Laos, dial the international prefix followed by the country code, or simply use internet calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data, which are cheap and popular. For local numbers, a Lao SIM makes calls and texts easy. Save your accommodation, tour operator and embassy numbers, and note that response times can be slow outside the main towns.
