Security Screening
What to expect at the security checkpoint
- TSA screening: X-ray and advanced imaging (body scanner)
- Shoes must be removed (unless TSA PreCheck)
- Laptops and electronics removed from bags
- Liquids in 3-1-1 quart bag
- Belt removal
- Random pat-down and swab tests
Carry-on restrictions:
Liquids over 3.4oz (100ml), sharp objects, lighters in checked bags, power banks in checked bags.
⚠ TSA PreCheck members can keep shoes/belts on and laptops in bags.
Immigration / Passport Control
Exit procedures and automated gates
Exit control: No formal exit immigration. CBP records departures via airline data.
Documents needed: Passport and boarding pass (for airline). Return I-94W stub if applicable.
⚠ No exit interview or stamp. Surrender I-94 form if you received a paper one.
Departure Tax & Airport Fees
Taxes and fees charged upon departure
Departure tax: Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) included in ticket.
Amount: Up to USD 4.50 per airport + other fees
Payment: Included in ticket price.
Duty-Free Shopping
Shopping options in the restricted area
Shopping options: Duty-free shops at all major international airports (DFS, Dufry, etc.).
Popular items: Liquor, cosmetics, perfume, electronics, designer brands.
⚠ US has no export VAT, so duty-free savings are mainly on liquor and tobacco.
Airport Lounges
Eligibility and how to access lounges
Lounge availability: Numerous lounges at major airports (Centurion, United Club, Delta Sky Club, Admirals Club).
Priority Pass: Accepted.
Access options: Priority Pass, credit card lounges (Amex Centurion, Capital One), airline status, paid entry (USD 50-75).
Departure Tips
Practical advice to avoid last-minute issues
- No exit immigration — just go through security and board.
- Return I-94 form if you received a paper one (rare now, mostly electronic).
- TSA PreCheck or Global Entry speeds up security significantly.
- Allow extra time at busy airports (LAX, JFK, ORD).
