Bangkok Shark Fin Soup Review | HOCK Shark Fins’ Rich Soup and Abalone Rice

On Surawong Road in Bangkok, HOCK Shark Fins is a restaurant worth knowing if shark fin soup is on your food list. Its thick, intensely flavored soup is especially memorable when paired with abalone rice.

Bangkok has several well-known places for shark fin soup, but HOCK Shark Fins stands out for its rich, almost gravy-like texture. In this review, I'll share what I actually ate, the atmosphere inside the restaurant, its location, payment options, and how to get there.

HOCK Shark Fins on Surawong Road

HOCK Shark Fins is located on Surawong Road in central Bangkok. If you have walked around this area before, you may already have passed the restaurant.

Nearby is Somboon Seafood's Surawong branch, famous for its pu pad pong curry, or stir-fried crab with curry powder and egg. I'll cover Somboon separately, but many Bangkok visitors will already be familiar with this part of Surawong Road.

Most of the seating is upstairs

One thing I noticed after entering was that much of the seating is on the upper floors, including the second and third floors. There are several separate rooms, giving the restaurant a layout that also seems suitable for groups or banquets.

The menu contains plenty besides shark fin, but I had researched what I wanted beforehand. My order was already decided.

I ordered the shark fin soup and abalone rice set

I chose a set menu featuring shark fin soup, abalone rice, and additional dishes. The set makes the meal feel complete rather than simply ordering a bowl of shark fin soup on its own.

Thick, rich and intensely flavored shark fin soup

The first thing that struck me was the richness. This is not a light, clear soup. It has a pronounced thickness and an almost sticky, velvety texture.

The seasoning is also quite strong. From the first spoonful, a deep savory flavor spreads across the palate. If you expect a delicate shark fin soup, this version may surprise you, but that intensity quickly becomes addictive.

Spoon after spoon, I kept eating. Then I started thinking, "I want something to eat with this." The soup is so concentrated that rice feels like the natural partner.

And right around that moment, the abalone rice arrived.

The shark fin soup and abalone rice combination is irresistible

One bite of abalone rice, then another spoonful of shark fin soup. This combination was easily the highlight of the meal.

The rice balances the strongly flavored soup, while the abalone adds another layer of texture and savory depth. Shark fin soup, abalone rice, shark fin soup again—the cycle just keeps going.

I barely slowed down and eventually found myself eating almost in silence. The soup is enjoyable on its own, but for me, pairing it with the abalone rice is what makes the experience at HOCK Shark Fins especially satisfying.

A satisfying set with other dishes and dessert

The set includes more than shark fin soup and abalone rice. There are other dishes such as stir-fries, followed by dessert, so by the end it feels like a full meal.

For travelers who want to try shark fin during a Bangkok trip while also enjoying a broader meal, the set format is convenient and filling.

Credit cards are accepted

Payment can be made in cash, and credit cards were also accepted when I visited. Card brands and payment conditions can change, so it is best to confirm with the restaurant when ordering or paying.

Walk from the BTS or take Grab or a taxi

Chong Nonsi and Sala Daeng are the main BTS stations to consider. It is possible to walk from the BTS, but Bangkok can be extremely hot and sudden rain is common.

If you would rather avoid arriving sweaty, taking Grab or a taxi directly to the restaurant is an easy option, especially when traveling with several people or coming straight from your hotel.

A good choice for rich shark fin soup in Bangkok

What I remember most about HOCK Shark Fins is the pairing of its thick, deeply flavored shark fin soup with abalone rice.

Shark fin soup → abalone rice → shark fin soup → abalone rice.

Bangkok has many restaurants serving shark fin soup, and the flavor and consistency vary considerably from place to place. If you prefer a thick, full-bodied and strongly seasoned style, HOCK Shark Fins is one to consider. If you visit, I recommend enjoying the abalone rice alongside it.
