If you're looking to splurge on a special meal in Bangkok, shark fin soup is one dish worth trying at least once.
This time I visited Ping's Shark's Fin (彬記頂上泰國魚翅酒樓), right in the heart of Bangkok in the Asok area.
There are several well-known shark fin restaurants in Bangkok, but what makes Ping's Shark's Fin stand out is that you can choose not only the amount of soup, but the size of the shark fin itself.
And most importantly, it tastes fantastic.
A rich soup full of shiitake mushrooms and crab meat, loaded with shark fin. On top of that, I ordered the crab fried rice and or suan (Thai-style oyster omelet) as well, and both were excellent.
If you want to eat shark fin in Asok, this is a place I'd happily recommend.
Authentic Shark Fin in Asok at Ping's Shark's Fin
Ping's Shark's Fin (彬記頂上泰國魚翅酒樓) sits in the Asok area of Bangkok.
Asok is easy to reach on both the BTS and the MRT, which makes it a handy base for getting around the city. It's a convenient spot not just if you're staying nearby, but also when you feel like treating yourself to a nicer dinner after a day of shopping or sightseeing.
When people think of shark fin in Bangkok, many picture Yaowarat (Chinatown), but one of the appeals of Ping's Shark's Fin is that you can enjoy proper shark fin right in Asok.
You don't need to head all the way to Chinatown to enjoy excellent shark fin around Sukhumvit.

The Best Part: You Can Pick the Size of the Shark Fin Itself
At shark fin restaurants in Bangkok, being able to choose the portion of soup (Small, Medium, Large) is fairly common.
But Ping's Shark's Fin goes a step further.
You can also choose the size of the shark fin itself, from small to large.
For shark fin lovers, that's a real treat.
If you've come all this way for shark fin, you don't just want "soup with a bit of shark fin in it"—you want to really savor the shark fin itself, the star of the dish.
Because you can match the shark fin to your budget and appetite, you can also go all out and think, "I'm here, so let's get the big one."
Getting to enjoy that specialty-restaurant feeling right from the moment you order is part of what makes Ping's Shark's Fin special.
A Rich Shark Fin Soup Loaded with Shiitake and Crab
Then came the shark fin soup itself.
And it's genuinely delicious.
The first thing that stands out is the thick, glossy broth. One spoonful and it fills your mouth with a deep, savory richness.
The soup also has shiitake mushrooms and crab meat in it, and the earthiness of the shiitake and the sweetness of the seafood give it even more depth.
It's rich, but not heavy—every spoonful just makes you want the next one.
Even without the shark fin, this broth is good enough to stand on its own as a dish.
But of course, the shark fin is the real star.
Plenty of Shark Fin in Every Bowl
Rising out of that rich broth is shark fin with real presence.
Scoop it up and the strands cling to your spoon, so you get the full benefit of that distinctive, silky-yet-firm texture.
And that rich broth I mentioned clings beautifully to the fin.
Shiitake, crab, a rich broth, and generous shark fin.
Everything comes together beautifully—this isn't just "good because it uses a luxury ingredient"; it's a genuinely well-executed bowl.
What's left when you finish is exactly that feeling of "now that's shark fin."
It's the kind of dish that reminds you why you decided to treat yourself in Bangkok in the first place.
The Crab Fried Rice Is Excellent Too
Alongside the shark fin soup, I ordered the crab fried rice.
I'd come with the shark fin in mind, but this crab fried rice was excellent in its own right.
The rice wasn't soggy at all—each grain was nicely separated, with none of the heaviness you sometimes get with fried rice.
Because it's a simple dish, you can really tell how well it was cooked, and the sweetness of the crab comes through clearly.
It also pairs beautifully with the rich shark fin soup.
Spooning up the shark fin soup between mouthfuls of that light crab fried rice is a combination I'd highly recommend.
Going back and forth between the rich broth and the fragrant rice, it's hard to put your spoon down.
The Or Suan Is Packed with Small Oysters—and Great Value
One more dish I have to mention is the or suan (Thai-style oyster omelet).
This one was also really satisfying.
The oysters are on the smaller side, but there are so many of them.
There are oysters in almost every bite, which makes the dish feel wonderfully generous—oyster lovers will be in heaven.
It's a different pleasure from having just a few large oysters; the joy here comes from an or suan generously packed with small oysters.
And for the amount you get, it's excellent value for money too.
I'd assumed the other dishes might play second fiddle at a shark fin specialist, but that wasn't the case at all.
I'd come back for the or suan alone, never mind the shark fin.
That's how much I liked it.
All Three Dishes at Ping's Shark's Fin Were a Hit
The three dishes I had at Ping's Shark's Fin were:
- Shark fin soup — a rich broth packed with shiitake and crab, plus generous shark fin
- Crab fried rice — light, well-separated grains that pair perfectly with the soup
- Or suan — loaded with small oysters, satisfying in both quantity and value
Honestly, all three were a hit.
The shark fin soup is clearly the star, but the crab fried rice and or suan are so good that eating only the shark fin and heading home would be a bit of a waste.
If you're visiting with a group, ordering a few dishes to share is a great idea.
Recommended for a Slightly Special Meal in Asok, Bangkok
On a trip to Thailand, hitting the street stalls and local eateries is fantastic, but at least once you'll probably want a slightly special dinner.
For that, Ping's Shark's Fin is a great choice.
It's in an easy-to-reach spot in Asok, yet you can pick the size of your shark fin and enjoy a proper, rich shark fin soup.
And the sides—crab fried rice and or suan—are delicious too.
"I feel like eating something nice tonight."
It's exactly the kind of place you'll want to pick on a night like that in Bangkok.
Summary: At Ping's Shark's Fin, the Sides Are as Good as the Shark Fin
The shark fin soup at Ping's Shark's Fin was even better than I'd expected.
A rich broth with the flavors of shiitake and crab melted right in.
And in it, plenty of shark fin with real presence.
Add to that the light, well-separated crab fried rice and an or suan absolutely packed with small oysters.
Every dish I ordered was a winner.
What felt especially unique to Ping's Shark's Fin was that you can even choose the size of the shark fin itself.
Bangkok has several famous shark fin restaurants, but the convenient location in Asok, the fun of choosing your own shark fin, the rich broth, and sides that are genuinely good are why I'd recommend this one.
If you're hunting for shark fin around Asok in Bangkok, this is a place I'd love for you to try at least once.
